World Soccer Spotlight - The FA Cup - Written by Jake Weber
Besides domestic leagues, international tournaments, and continental competitions, every professional soccer team competes in a domestic cup typically hosted by the nation's Football Association. Typically, this tournament is played throughout the year and has a final at a neutral location at the end of the year. England is special however as they have two domestic cups. The League Cup and the FA Cup. The difference between the two comes down to who can compete. In the League Cup, only the 92 teams within the top four divisions of English soccer can compete. In the FA Cup, all teams down to the 9th division of English soccer can compete. The fact the FA cup allows so many teams to compete makes it the more popular of the two trophies.
Because of the FA Cup’s large team pool that reaches as far down as the 9th tier, there have been true David and Goliath matchups in the competition’s history. Most recently, in 2021 Tottenham Hotspur, who are one of the largest and richest clubs in England and who have had players such as Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, and Harry Kane play for them, were matched up against 8th tier Marine A.F.C. Marine A.F.C.’s stadium could hold just over 2,100 people with only 389 seats available. This number is just over three percent of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s capacity of 62,850. Tottenham had to travel to Marine’s ground and the Spurs went on to win 5-0 in one of the biggest mismatches in soccer history.
This weekend the FA Cup enters its third round of play, which is also the first round in which Premier League teams can compete. The teams are drawn randomly with each other which can lead to some tough matchups for teams early on. Some games to look out for this weekend include:
• Manchester United vs. Everton 1/6/23 2:00 pm
• Brentford vs. West Ham 1/7/23 11:30 am
• Manchester City vs. Chelsea 1/8/23 10:30 am
Last year’s FA Cup winner was Liverpool. They defeated Chelsea on penalties and will face Wolverhampton Saturday at 2 pm.
