This Week in Soccer:

The World Cup Final is this Sunday at 9am. The finalists are Argentina and France. This is Lionel Messi’s 5th World Cup appearance and potentially his last chance to win a World Cup!

Professional Player Spotlight:

This weeks pro player spotlight is Olivier Giroud. Giroud is currently a striker for AC Milan and the French National Team. He will be competing for France in the World Cup Final on Sunday. He currently has 4 goals at the World Cup, 1 goal behind the top goal scorers, Leo Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

Giroud stepped into the international spotlight when he signed for Arsenal in 2012. At Arsenal he made 180 appearances while scoring 73 goals. Giroud became known for scoring outrageous goals, even winning the Puskas Award (best goal of the year) for a scorpion kick goal in 2017. While at Arsenal, he helped the team win 3 FA Cups, however he was never able to win a Premier League Title with the team. Giroud played for Arsenal for 6 seasons before moving to Premier League rival, Chelsea.

At Chelsea, Giroud scored 17 goals in 75 appearances across 4 seasons. He was never quite able to match his goalscoring form he had at Arsenal. At Chelsea, he won an FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Europa League. In 2021, he once again scored an iconic goal. Winning a Champions League match against Athletico Madrid with a bicycle kick goal.

After 4 seasons, Giroud moved on to AC Milan in 2021. At AC Milan he has scored 16 goals in 42 matches. A much better goal scoring record than his tenure at Chelsea. At AC Milan he has won a Serie A League title in 2021-22. He is still at AC Milan today.

Olivier Giroud has also made 119 career appearances for the French National Team, scoring 53 goals. He is France’s all time leading goal scorer. He made is first appearance for the team in 2011, while he was playing for Montpellier in France. Since then he has been a consistent member of the squad. He was a member of France’s World Cup winning squad in 2018.

Giroud continues to score goals at 36 years old. Make sure to watch the World Cup Final on Sunday morning to see him in action!
