Derbies - Written by Jake Weber

This past week Real Madrid played Barcelona for the 252nd time in their history. Barcelona defeated Madrid and secured their 99th win in El Clasico history. El Clasico is the name given to the matchup between the historic Spanish rivals. El Clasico is probably the most famous and evenly contested example of what is called a derby in soccer. In simpler terms, a derby is a hotly contested and long-standing rivalry, and while historically the term derby was reserved for purely local matchups, the modern use of the word encompasses rivalries that cross city borders.

Here are some of the most intense derbies in Great Britain. The Old Firm Derby in Glasgow between Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers is an interesting rivalry that has fans not only divided by the club they support but also by political and religious boundaries. Celtic was more associated with Catholicism and Scottish independence and Rangers were associated with Protestantism and British Loyalism. Many clubs compete in multiple derbies. For example, Liverpool has an intense rivalry with their local rivals Everton known as the Merseyside Derby, but at the same time share an intense and historic rivalry with Manchester United and whenever the two sides meet it is known as the Northwest Derby as both clubs reside in that region of England. As mentioned, the term derby historically refers to a local matchup, however, in a city like London which has seven teams currently in the Premier League, derbies are more commonly associated with the region within the city in which the teams reside. The most intense and historic of these London derbies is the North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham.

Some other famous derbies from around the world include the Derby Della Madonnina. This Italian derby that sees AC Milan take on Inter Milan is extra special because both teams share the same stadium, The San Siro. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund has a fierce rivalry known as Der Klassiker with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. However, despite Europe’s dominance of club soccer, possibly the greatest and most intense derby in the world takes place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Superclasico between River Plate and Boca Juniors sees Argentina’s two top teams go at it in a match that is constantly described as one of the greatest sporting spectacles in the world.
